At the age of 31 Heikki became the 1976 250cc World Champion motocross.

Heikki Mikkola at the start of the first moto. When the gate dropped Heikki almost lost it at the start when he got his Husqvarna too high and pitched it to the right, almost hitting Gerard Rond (16).

After a second place in the first moto, behind Gennady Moiseev (USSR), Heikki Mikkola become the 1976 250cc world champion motocross.

With this result Heikki becomes the very first motocross rider to hold world titles in both the 250cc (1976) and 500cc (1974) class.
